Mapping Geothermal Resources

When you own or operate a geothermal power plant, it is imperative that you understand the location and extent of a geothermal resource. In a non-intrusive way we can help you pinpoint the location of a geothermal resource and reveal to what extent it exists in the subsurface. Our AquaTrack technology is a patented, magnetic-based groundwater mapping solution that has proven extremely accurate and cost effective in mapping geothermal resources. With AquaTrack you can:

  • Accuratley map geothermal resrouces
  • Optimize production and injection well sitings
  • Continually monitor geothermal resources

Why choose us?

When you choose Willowstick, you will receive detailed maps that delineate areas of high and low water concentrations as well as the preferential flow paths of the water within the subsurface. Armed with this information, you can effectively monitor changes in your geothermal resource, optimize production and injection

Groundwater monitoring

We can provide you with continuous monitoring of the geothermal groundwater. This information gives you up-to-date information about the current utilization of your geothermal resources and the impact it is having upon the groundwater supply. This allows you to respond quickly to emerging problems in order to maximize productivity.

Smart placement of injection and production wells

The AquaTrack technology can greatly enhance your placement of production and injection wells. Because you will be able to “see” the character of your geothermal resource, you will be able to ensure that injection and production wells are optimally located. As a result, an injection well can be strategically placed so that it does not negatively impact the temperature of the production well, while at the same time ensuring sufficient recharge for future production.

Because we provide you with an accurate map showing the location of geothermal water, your exploratory efforts become much less complicated and much more reliable. Most geophysical technologies energize the ground and then, through their interpretative processes, estimate the location and extent of groundwater. AquaTrack directly energizes the groundwater of interest and the result is a much more conclusive understanding of where groundwater is and where it is not.

We can usually conduct your Willowstick survey in a matter of days instead of weeks and months, as is often the case with other geophysical methods. In addition, the AquaTrack survey is non-intrusive and does not require bulky equipment or the detonation of explosives. In fact, in most cases, a survey can be conducted using existing wells. Because of these advantages, we can provide you with significant value per dollar spent over traditional groundwater mapping techniques.

How it works

AquaTrack uses a low voltage, low amperage, audio frequency electrical current to energize the groundwater. Electrodes are placed strategically in wells near the survey area. Because the groundwater is a conductor, the electrical current follows through the groundwater between the electrodes.

The AquaTrack receiver measures the specific magnetic field generated by the electrical current, filters out interference, and amplifies the signal. Repeated measurements are recorded over time to ensure consistent results. The recorded data is corrected to remove fluctuations due to natural phenomena and man-made interference. The horizontal and vertical magnetic field magnitudes and directions can be measured to further define the extent and paths of groundwater.

AquaTrack survey data is normalized to show relative highs and lows in the field data. These are referred to as anomalies that represent areas of different physical conditions. The changes in conductivity represent an increase or decrease in the presence of groundwater. In the simplest terms, the AquaTrack technology identifies where groundwater is most present in the area of investigation.
